A few hours ago, Adele celebrated her birthday with a post on Instagram--that has been completely taking over my fitness IG's feed. Although the transition looks gradual (based off of previous pictures posted on her account), those who don't follow Adele on social media may be dumbstruck by her most recent picture, showing the once thick icon completely transformed. While it may have gotten lost in the shuffle (I can't even find it), I decided to comment on the post saying something along the lines of, "It doesn't matter what comments you get, good or bad, as long as you're happy and healthy." That's truly how I feel about it, but it did take me a moment to get there.
Every body reacts differently to proper nutrition and regular exercise. Some people slim down (sometimes drastically), some stay relatively the same and gain some muscle, and some seem healthier and happier. There's plenty of benefits to proper exercise and nutrition, and sometimes losing weight is one of them. Here's the complication with photos: you don't know what went into them. You don't know the exercise regimen, the eating habits, whether it was done healthily or not--unless, of course, it's shared. If Adele lost weight in a healthy manner and wasn't influenced by higher-ups controlling her image or negative self-talk, then this is a stunning transformation. If she's healthier and happier, then it truly is remarkable how intensely her body reacted to proper nutrition and exercise--but we can't be certain this is the case. Celebrity culture is all about image. If you're thick, you're going to get hate. If you're thin, you're going to get hate. If you're thick, you're going to be a role model. If you're thin, you're going to be a role model. Adele I'm sure got hate all the time for being a thicker woman, but she was also an inspiration to those of us who aren't "Hollywood slim" as I like to call it. Adele's transformation may be devastating to some people, especially those of us who aren't thin. It's another one of our idols doing something that we, the average person, can't do without celebrity-style resources and money. While it's amazing for a thick girl to have a major fitness transformation, it also means that there's one less person who goes against the celebrity-body-type grain for us to look up to. Here's the thing: Adele is not an average person. She has the money, time, and resources to undergo a major transformation such as this. She has pressure on her to undergo a major transformation such as this, and we will never know the why, what, and how unless she tells us. So, here's my advice to you: the average person who was also rocked by this celebrity transformation. 1) Love and accept her body and also your body. Body positivity doesn't mean you look a certain way. It means you celebrate every body: whether it looks like yours or not. 2) Hope that she transformed for herself and not for others. 3) Celebrate confidence, not image. I hope this helps, I hope you celebrate your body today, and I hope you enjoy your day! ~E
