At some point in my college career (whether it was sophomore or junior year), I took an Introduction to Design course where we had multiple units, each with a member of the design/tech faculty. One of the most influential and informational classes we had was taught by one of the costume professors. He presented this thought: Everyone in the room thought about what they were wearing and made a conscious choice. To which, my smarta** self piped up and said, "I literally grabbed this off the floor." (Believe me, when I wore a sweatshirt, it was a choice.) What we wear immediately sends a message to the people around us. Whether it's a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, a dress, or some slacks, we send a message through our clothes.
At this point, I'm in some kind of weird middle ground where I don't feel old enough to *look* like a professional but I don't feel like it's appropriate for me to dress like I would going to class. To be honest, it would be impractical to wear nicer clothes to work (5-6 year olds can do a lot of damage with glue, ya'll), but I don't feel like I've hit the nail on the head when it comes to my personal professional style. I hate to say it, but because of this in-between space, I've been feeling a little lost and therefore a little insecure in how I'm presenting myself. I'm all for body confidence and self confidence, but the little green monster of insecurity has been coming out. When it comes down to it, everyone is on their own path and everyone has a different lifestyle and body type. I'm lucky and have definitely latched onto a lot of pretty great role models, but because most of them are older than me, I'll watch them do their thing and I'll start feeling like I'm not doing enough or I'm not fashionable enough--which is unfortunate. Inspiration really is wonderful and so is having positive role models. Although insecurity is just something I have to work through, there are a handful of people that regularly inspire me to be my most confident self! I'm all for other women and semi-adults finding resources for body positivity, self-love and self-care. Here are some links to the people that inspire me who are out in the public for you to look to as well! Sierra Schultzzie: YouTube influencer, body positivity warrior, and fabulous personality who actually looks like a normal human being.
Madison Kwatyra: Healthy human, real person, and someone who motivates me on a regular basis! Check her Instagram out if you need a little motivation or to get in a good mood.
