I'm hoping that at some point in your lifetime you've heard of the word "portions" or "food groups." How long has it been since you've checked in with these? Do you actually know what portions go where, what you need in a day, and how much of it? I sure as heck didn't!
Out of pure curiosity, I went on a website that I haven't used since elementary school--and it actually reminded me that I'm eating too much of some things and too little of others. The website is https://www.choosemyplate.gov/ and it's a fantastic resource for all things health.
Although it has an incredible amount of resources and articles on things like healthy eating on a budget, one of my favorite tools is the MyPlate Plan where you can get your portion sizes right then and there. Just because I love it so much, I've added the widget down at the bottom of this post! After using the MyPlate Plan, I was able to click on the calories that they recommended and it brought me to a page where it showed me what portions I should have throughout the day. While I haven't been perfect in my portions, I created a whiteboard with my numbers on it to track how many servings I've had of everything. It's a great way to make sure I know where I am without counting calories--the portion sizes do that for you! As with anything, I'm sure that it would be beneficial for me to see a doctor in order to make sure I'm truly eating enough for my level of activity--but this is a reliable place to start. Another resource from Choose My Plate is their food group breakdown. From fruits to dairy, they not only give recommendations on daily intake but also on what you can be having! I don't know about you but I'll eat the same thing for a couple of weeks and then get burnt out. This is a great tool for when you get burned out on eating the same thing week after week. I hope that this helps you as much as it has helped me! Again, this is just a starting point and I highly recommend you see a registered dietitian for all your food-related needs. ~E
