I started my brand new job last Tuesday and, although it's only been just over a week, I've already learned so much and have been told by the 8th graders that just saying "Ms. B" instead of my full name is easier to work with (and I'm so happy about that). I have worked in education in some capacity since the summer of my freshman year of high school. I started as a half-day preschool assistant for a summer program, then shuffled around between the program's preschool and kindergarten, administration, and eventually landed as the education intern at a major theatre company.
While working as a barista was fine, I knew that the next place I needed to look for work was at a school. Luckily, after weeks of searching, I landed a gig as a Kindergarten Teacher's assistant and I'm already having such a great time. The kids I work with always teach me a lot and give me a lot to reflect on every day. As a young student, I didn't really consider the fact that teachers had lives after school. Heck, I'm pretty sure that I thought they were just always teachers. So, when it comes down to it, I'm so happy to tell my students about my family, or to let the middle schoolers know that I understand what they're going through--even though they think I'm in my 30s and "Can't possibly understand the struggle." (This made me laugh out loud.)
