Millennials* have been labeled as one of the most ambitious generations alive today. Among a myriad of terms given to them, "Job-Hopping" or "Delusional" are often negative terms thrown around by employers because we as a generation just won't sit still. Sure, it's not like we're perfect in every conceivable way, but wouldn't you rather be ambitious than complacent? *Yes, I am considering myself a Millennial despite being born in 1997. I do not fit in with the technological advancements given to Gen Z because of the way I was raised, and am, therefore, putting myself into the Millennial category. If you look at the generations before us, there were, of course, some efforts to create positive change, especially when it comes to women's and civil rights (in some capacities). However, many people accepted their roles and stuck with them for long periods of time. While this shows dedication to *insert brand or company name here*, this doesn't necessarily represent the level of satisfaction.
Let's take someone working at a grocery store (this is completely fictional). We'll give this person a job starting around 1960 at the age of 15. Now this person works at this store their whole life, maybe even climbing up the ladder every so often. Now, it's 2019. This person is about to retire at the age of 74 as a store manager, and has been for the last 20 years. They always look tired because of the inconsistent hours, they have horror stories of vomit, rude customers and employees, and although they can put food on the table, they haven't had a true vacation for years. Now, of course, many of you will say, "Look at that dedication! AND they were able to become a manager!" But what I see is a pretty dismal overall quality of life where this person is over-worked, probably underpaid, and hasn't truly gotten to enjoy what this world has to offer because they were so busy being dedicated to the brand. Of course, stability is never guaranteed, so why not remain in a place where you know you'll have a stable job? But is stability worth regular misery? This is where the millennial generation comes in. Of course, there are some of us who will come into old money and work up the ladder, pursuing what our families did before us. Then, there are others who are comfortable being in the same place for years on end because it provides stability and they may even genuinely enjoy their jobs. However, there are also people like me, who aren't satisfied by stability alone and actively seek out a better quality of life. I am not a lazy person. I enjoy working hard for what I earn and I haven't heard any complaints about my work ethic from any of my employers. I enjoy the predictability of a 9 to 5 because I can work the rest of my day around it--whether it's going out into the city, seeing friends, going to the gym, or going to a rehearsal.
