It's been a long week and a bit, but I'm so happy to say that we have successfully moved from Tucson, AZ to Chicago, IL! Thank you to everyone who helped us in any way, whether that was through some graduation gifts, advice, or well-wishes. A little goes a long way! Dylan and I started planning our move almost as soon as we got together--if you want to think about it that way. I told him "Hey, if you want or need to, you can always live in my plastic box at the side of the road." (It's a starving artist pun, my friends) and the rest is history. We started talking about moving to Portland for a few months, but something wasn't completely sitting right with me. So, I talked to him about it, and we ended up changing directions from the pacific northwest to the midwest. If you ask me how or when we decided on Chicago, I really have no answers for you. It just kind of seemed right. However, I do have answers on the why: 1) Big cities have so much more to do--sports, plays, adventures, parks, activities, food, you name it. 2) The public transportation is incredible here (no car, no problem). 3) The theatre here is on another level, and there are so many more opportunities. 4) Arizona 100% was not right for me. We started packing about a week prior to the move. Initially, we thought we were going to rent something from UHaul or Enterprise but between the hotels, gas, and food, flying in the wee hours of the morning was a lot cheaper than the van. Thanks to Dylan's stepdad, we were also able to ship the things we needed to ourselves for an insanely affordable price (you should've seen my face when I saw the receipt). It was definitely a lot more difficult to pack than it was to take everything out of the boxes, and we were cleaning right down to the wire--also shoutout to my dad who hired a professional after we were done, the apartment needed it. So, by 5:30am on Monday, we were heading toward the airport, and then on a plane to Chicago by 7:30am. Landing into Midway was surreal. We were glued to the window, and couldn't believe how green and lush everything was. The biggest challenge that day was definitely getting our five huge bags out of the Lyft but otherwise we got to unpack, grab the keys, and wander around. One of the best parts about shipping our boxes were that they came at a later date, so we had time to unpack the bags of clothes and wander around the city instead of feeling forced to unpack everything all at once. We took this (and the gorgeous, sunny weather) to our advantage and went to Millennium Park to see the Bean (Cloud Gate), the coast of Lake Michigan, and wandered around the downtown area. Over the last week, we explored our part of town, went to see a play at Victory Gardens, drank a lot of coffee, and had a "Chicago handshake"--a shot of Malört and a local beer. Of course, we unpacked everything eventually--including bikes, and tried to establish ourselves as well. We bought and put together a box spring mattress, set up internet, opened up bank accounts, and got a gym membership. (We also bought a popcorn bucket and a cart for pulling groceries, which I'm extremely excited about). I'd say that we're truly in this "adulthood" thing now. Up next is our first few days at our respective jobs, more film and theatre applications, and hopefully some more small adventures! Here's to a new chapter!
