Moving from Chicago to L.A. was a big change. The biggest of all? The weather! We left 50 degrees and below for 75-85 and had to adjust our workout schedule accordingly. It's fairly easy to bundle up in the winter, but what do you do when you can't take off any more layers without it becoming illegal and still want to work out outside? I haven't been in Los Angeles for the summer in a couple of years. When I say I have to adjust, I actually mean it. I completely forgot about how hot it can get here, and my body is still oriented to the Chicago winters where 50 degrees was still warm. So, how are we coping with the heat and still getting our workouts in?
1) Adjust your timing. Running in the afternoon? Not such a good idea anymore. Even if you have to wake up a little earlier, it's best to get outside in the morning before the sun has warmed everything up. 2) 24 hours of hydration. Proper hydration throughout the day before and the day of your workout helps prevent dehydration and fatigue during summer workouts. 3) Wear the proper clothing. Don't break the bank, but invest in some good clothing options that are made to help with temperature control and sweat. If you're like me and you need shorts that don't ride up, capri leggings and bike shorts have been my go-to. If you're uncomfortable going out with your tummy showing, wear something that's at least loose-fitting so you have ample "breathing room." 4) Take a towel and sunscreen. Soak a hand towel or a wash cloth in some water or wrap some ice in it. Let me tell you--it's perfect if you need a little relief. If you're outside for a long period of time, make sure you re-apply your sunscreen! 5) Warm up and cool down. Let yourself get used to the temperature outside, and make sure you properly warm up and cool down to avoid injury and overheating. What are some ways you safely work out in the summer heat? I hope you have a happy and healthy week ahead! ~E
